Speaking in his post-match press conference, Emery said the referee had warned the bench that the forward needed to keep calm. The head coach added that he knows Jackson well enough to recognise when an aggressive action might draw another card, and described the withdrawal as his own decision rather than a response to injury.
Tammy Abraham replaced Jackson for the second half but struggled to influence proceedings. Liam Delap had given Forest the lead shortly after the restart before Alysson levelled with a header in the 74th minute. Villa were reduced to ten men late on when Ian Maatsen suffered an injury after all five substitutions had been used, and Igor Jesus restored Forest's advantage in the closing stages.
Emery also expressed frustration over the challenge that forced Maatsen off, suggesting James McAtee should have seen a red card and questioning why VAR did not intervene. The manager indicated the full-back could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Football Insider has since reported that former Aston Villa scout Mick Brown views the episode as evidence of deeper issues surrounding Jackson's temperament. Brown told the outlet that having a leading striker who might not complete ninety minutes creates problems for the squad, pointing to the player's previous dismissals at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Jackson arrived at Villa Park in a deal worth £47.5 million during the summer window, with Emery's relationship with the forward considered a key factor in securing the transfer. With the window now closed until January 2027, the coaching staff must work with the current squad to address any disciplinary patterns quickly.
Saturday's result leaves Villa without a Premier League victory this season. Attention now turns to their next fixture against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup, where avoiding further suspensions will be essential.
