Unai Emery has moved to reassure supporters over Alejandro Garnacho’s future at Aston Villa, insisting the winger was brought in with a long-term plan despite a quiet opening to the campaign. The 22-year-old arrived from Chelsea during the summer window on a season-long loan that includes a conditional obligation to buy, yet his involvement so far has been minimal.
Garnacho has managed only 31 minutes of Premier League action, spread across three brief substitute outings, and remained on the bench entirely for Tuesday’s 3-2 Champions League victory at Club Brugge. Teenager George Hemmings has been preferred ahead of him in the early weeks of the season.
Addressing reporters before Saturday’s league meeting with Nottingham Forest, Emery stressed that patience is required. He praised the Argentine’s daily application and said he trusts the attacker will progressively reach his best level, adding that every training session shows signs of improvement even if match minutes have not yet followed.
The Villa head coach also set out what he wants to see from his new signing, pointing to the form Garnacho produced during the first half of last term at Chelsea and two years ago at Manchester United. Emery described him as someone the club has secured for a lengthy period and pledged to help him regain confidence and comfort.
Football Insider reports that Villa are already planning to convert the temporary arrangement into a permanent deal when the conditions are met, with the potential fee cited as £43 million. Former club scout Mick Brown told the outlet he found both the initial move and the swift commitment to keeping the player surprising, given how little football he has played so far.
Emery acknowledged the broader challenge of integrating several new arrivals while maintaining results in the Premier League, which he described as the priority. He noted that consistency in selection has helped the team improve, referencing contributions from players such as Pau Torres, Tyrone Mings, Ross Barkley and Joao Gomes as examples of the squad settling into their roles.
With the transfer window now shut until January 2027, Garnacho’s immediate path to game time lies in domestic cup football. Wednesday’s EFL Cup third-round tie against Coventry City could offer the most realistic opportunity for him to start and attempt to justify the faith Emery has publicly placed in him.
