Zion Suzuki's start to life as Aston Villa's first-choice goalkeeper has drawn criticism from a familiar voice, with former senior scout Bryan King questioning his authority in the penalty area. Speaking to Football Insider, King suggested the 24-year-old has struggled with decisions over whether to claim crosses or hold his position during his opening four appearances.
Suzuki arrived from Parma in August in a deal reported to be worth around £30 million, stepping into the role vacated by Emiliano Martínez following the Argentine's move to Chelsea at the close of the transfer window. He has kept one clean sheet so far, in the Champions League victory at Club Brugge, while conceding in defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest and a draw at Hull City.
King pointed to moments against Arsenal and Saturday's 2-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest where he felt the Japan international looked uncertain. Liam Delap's strike from distance at Villa Park was described as brilliantly taken, though King argued Suzuki might feel he should have been closer to it, while Igor Jesus's winning header left the goalkeeper with little chance.
The former scout told Football Insider that bravery for a goalkeeper is defined less by diving at feet and more by the willingness to commit to coming for balls delivered into the box, adding that Suzuki still has plenty to prove in that regard.
There are encouraging signs elsewhere in Suzuki's game. He holds a 76.9 per cent save rate across his first four matches and has made ten saves, including a sharp stop to deny Xaver Schlager against Forest. His distribution has also caught the eye, with 18 completed long passes highlighting the technical quality that attracted Unai Emery's staff in the first place.
Villa travel to the Coventry Building Society Arena tonight to face Coventry City in the League Cup before visiting Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday. A settled defensive unit in those fixtures will give Suzuki a clearer platform to quieten his early doubters.
