Aston Villa completed the signing of Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton for a reported £30 million on the final day of the summer transfer window, but the 24-year-old defender will not play in this season's Champions League. Football Insider reported on 7 September that the centre-back has been excluded from the club's European squad for the group stage, meaning he cannot feature in the competition until at least February.
Unai Emery addressed the situation by pointing to the need for squad balance. With the window having closed on 1 September, no Premier League club can register new players for European competition until the January 2027 window opens, leaving Villa unable to add their latest arrival to the list.
Instead, Emery has opted for experience at the back. Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof are among those selected for the continental campaign, while Tyrone Mings and young defender Lamare Bogarde also make up the defensive options submitted to UEFA. Brian Madjo is the only other player said to have missed out alongside Harwood-Bellis.
Bryan King, a former senior scout at the club, told Football Insider he found the exclusion difficult to understand. King suggested that the prospect of Champions League football would have been a significant factor in persuading the defender to leave Southampton, who currently play in the Championship, and questioned how the omission might affect the player's morale after putting pen to paper on a long-term contract.
Harwood-Bellis previously appeared in the competition once during his time at Manchester City in 2019. He will now have to focus entirely on domestic fixtures as he settles into life at Villa Park, with his first opportunity to be registered for European football arriving when the next window opens in the new year.
