Villa warned of financial strain if Champions League status is lost
A former Premier League finance adviser says the summer departures have left the club reliant on European revenue to balance the books under UEFA rules.
Stefan Borson has cautioned that Aston Villa could face mounting pressure under UEFA financial regulations unless they continue to compete in the Champions League. The former Manchester City financial adviser told Football Insider on 29 August that the club’s recent transfer activity has placed them in a precarious position heading into the current campaign.
With the summer window having shut on 1 September, the squad Unai Emery works with until January 2027 is now set. According to Borson, the scale of player movement over the past few months means European revenue will be essential to keep spending within the permitted limits of the squad cost ratio system.
Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne are among those said to have moved on, while Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers have also reportedly departed. Borson added that Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez were expected to follow them out of the door before the deadline passed.
To offset those exits, Villa are said to have brought in Nicolas Jackson, Johan Manzambi and Zion Suzuki. Leon Goretzka was also mentioned as arriving without a transfer fee but on a substantial salary, adding to the wage structure Borson highlighted as a concern.
He argued that the accounting treatment of profits under UEFA rules differs significantly from the old Premier League framework. Rather than recognising gains immediately, the benefits are spread across three years, which he suggested would leave the club stretched going forward.
On the pitch, Villa began the league campaign with a heavy loss to Brighton. Attention quickly shifted to Europe, where Emery’s side faced Club Brugge in their opening Champions League fixture earlier this month.
Borson compared the situation to the financial tightrope walked by Tottenham Hotspur in previous seasons, suggesting that only regular participation at the highest European level can sustain the current model. Aston Villa have not publicly commented on his assessment.
