Aston Villa advanced in the League Cup with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday night. The win keeps Unai Emery's side in the competition and offered a welcome response after Saturday's Premier League defeat by Nottingham Forest at Villa Park.
Tammy Abraham led the way with two goals during his 69 minutes on the pitch, finishing with a team-high rating of 9.1. His brace gave the visitors control of the tie against their Championship hosts.
Ross Barkley was heavily involved throughout the contest, playing the full 90 minutes. He scored once, set up another goal, attempted three shots and picked up a booking during a busy evening in midfield.
Summer signing Ibrahim Mbaye made his presence felt before being withdrawn after 64 minutes. The former Paris Saint-Germain player registered four key passes and provided an assist, while fellow new arrival George Hemmings also contributed a creative pass before departing with eleven minutes remaining.
At the back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lamare Bogarde, Tyrone Mings, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Matteo Ruggeri all completed the full match. Wan-Bissaka received a yellow card but the defensive unit largely kept Coventry at bay.
Marco Bizot started between the posts and played the first half, handing over to fellow goalkeeper Zion Suzuki at the interval as Emery shared the workload across his squad.
Villa now turn their attention back to the Premier League, travelling to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday for a 12:30 kick-off.
