Aston Villa progressed in the League Cup with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday night. Tammy Abraham was the standout performer, finding the net twice to help his side to a comfortable win.

Both the Express & Star and BirminghamWorld highlighted the striker's contribution, describing his brace as the decisive factor in the contest. The result means Villa move into the next round of the competition after an assured display away from home.

Wednesday's trip to Coventry followed a busy period for Unai Emery's squad. Villa came into the tie having beaten Club Brugge 3-2 in the Champions League eight days earlier, while also suffering a 2-1 Premier League defeat by Nottingham Forest at Villa Park on Saturday.

Abraham's double will be particularly welcome given the significant changes to Villa's attacking options during the summer transfer window. Ollie Watkins departed for Al Hilal before the window closed on 1 September, with Nicolas Jackson arriving from Chelsea as one of several new additions to the squad.

Villa now turn their attention back to the Premier League, travelling to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to face Tottenham Hotspur at 12:30 UK time on Saturday 19 September.
