Taylor Harwood-Bellis remains without a first-team appearance since joining Aston Villa from Southampton for £25m before the transfer window shut on 1 September. The 24-year-old arrived as a direct successor to Ezri Konsa but was omitted from Unai Emery's Champions League squad shortly after completing the move.
According to Football Insider, former chief executive Keith Wyness says the exclusion stems from UEFA financial regulations rather than any assessment of the defender's quality. Speaking on the publication's Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that List A registrations must satisfy squad cost ratio requirements, which restricted the club to naming 23 players instead of the permitted 25.
Wyness, who led the club's operations from 2016 until 2018 and currently advises top-level teams through his own consultancy, admitted the decision initially caught him off guard. He suggested that while selling Konsa improved compliance, adding Harwood-Bellis so late in the window may have pushed the numbers beyond what the rules allowed.
Tyrone Mings, Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof all secured places among the selected central defenders. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Lamare Bogarde are also understood to be available to fill in at the back if required.
Supporters questioned the logic of leaving out a player recruited for such a substantial fee. Wyness insisted the circumstances were driven by administrative technicalities surrounding settlement agreements rather than footballing judgement.
With the window now closed until 1 January 2027, no Premier League club can register new signings for domestic competition in the meantime. However, Wyness predicted that Harwood-Bellis would feature on an updated European list later in the campaign should Villa advance past the current stage.
