Unai Emery is eager to concentrate purely on football following a turbulent summer at Aston Villa, according to Birmingham Live. The local outlet reported earlier this month that the manager welcomed the closure of the transfer window, which finally ended weeks of intense speculation surrounding several senior figures at the club.
Villa experienced a major reshaping of their squad after lifting silverware last season. Birmingham Live states that six members of the team which started the Europa League final have since moved on. Emi Martinez, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne were among those whose time in claret and blue came to an end, alongside Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers. Ollie Watkins also departed, completing a switch to Al-Hilal after apologising for refusing to feature in the opening-day defeat at Brighton.
The publication claims the club did not initially intend to lose so many key individuals but ultimately had little choice once players felt their respective chapters had concluded. In response, Villa pursued a dual strategy of raising revenue and lowering the average age of the playing staff. Nicolas Jackson was brought in as Emery’s primary target to lead the line, with the forward noted as being five years younger than his predecessor.
Ten fresh faces arrived before the deadline passed on 1 September. The recruitment drive began with Johan Manzambi and concluded with Ibrahim Mbaye and Taylor Harwood-Bellis signing on the final day. Alejandro Garnacho, Joao Gomes, Matteo Ruggeri and Zion Suzuki were highlighted as arrivals aged 25 or under, fitting the broader youth-focused approach.
Leon Goretzka and Aaron Wan-Bissaka provided necessary experience to balance the influx of younger talent. Birmingham Live suggests the overarching aim was to ensure two capable options exist for every position while maintaining tactical flexibility across the pitch.
Versatility appears central to Emery’s plans for the campaign ahead. Ross Barkley, John McGinn, Victor Lindelof and Lamare Bogarde are cited as players capable of operating in multiple roles, with Emi Buendia and Garnacho offering further adaptability behind the striker. With business now concluded until January 2027, the focus shifts entirely to results on the pitch.
