Aston Villa were held to a goalless draw by Hull City at the MKM Stadium in a contest covered by Birmingham Live on 5 September. The stalemate meant Unai Emery’s side remained without a victory in their opening three league fixtures of the campaign.
Villa had begun the season with heavy defeats, losing 4-0 away to Brighton before a 1-0 home reverse against Arsenal. Emery’s players travelled to East Yorkshire hoping to secure their first points, but were unable to break down a confident Hull defence.
The hosts arrived at the fixture buoyed by consecutive wins over Manchester United and Coventry City. Birmingham Live noted that this was the first competitive meeting between the two clubs since a 2-2 Championship draw in January 2019, with Hull having won only once in their previous 16 encounters against Villa.
Emery had never previously managed against Hull in the top flight. According to the pre-match statistics cited by Birmingham Live, the Spaniard has defeated 27 of the 28 opponents he has faced in the competition, with Ipswich Town the sole exception, and he had not lost a league match against a newly promoted team during his time at Villa Park.
With the summer transfer window having closed on 1 September, Villa must work with their current squad to address the early-season struggles. No further business can be completed until the market reopens on 1 January 2027, leaving Emery to find solutions from within his existing group.
