Garnacho left out again as Emery echoes loan rhetoric from Elliott era

Alejandro Garnacho remained on the bench throughout Aston Villa's 3-1 League Cup win at Coventry City on Wednesday, marking a third consecutive match in which he went unused despite extensive squad rotation. Football365 reports that the winger has now played only 32 minutes across three Premier League outings since arriving from Chelsea in July and is yet to start a competitive fixture for the club.
Speaking after the victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Unai Emery was asked what the forward needs to do to earn game time. He replied that Garnacho must continue training and working, adding that the player is progressing but currently has others ahead of him in the pecking order. Emery named George Hemmings and Alysson among those performing well.
The publication draws a direct comparison between Emery's current messaging and his handling of Harvey Elliott during the previous campaign. Elliott, who was on loan from Liverpool, accumulated 277 minutes for Villa before eventually departing for Valencia. Emery initially cited tactical decisions and performance levels for limiting the midfielder's involvement, only acknowledging months later that the club had deliberately avoided reaching ten Premier League appearances to prevent a £35m mandatory purchase.
According to Football365, Garnacho's move from Chelsea includes a similar conditional obligation, reportedly set at £42.5m and dependent on his number of appearances. With the summer transfer window having closed on 1 September, any decision regarding his longer-term future cannot be acted upon until the market reopens in January 2027.
