Stephen Warnock believes Liverpool should rue passing up the chance to sign Zion Suzuki after the goalkeeper joined Aston Villa earlier this month. The summer transfer window closed on 1 September, with Villa having already secured the Japan international as part of a busy period of recruitment at Bodymoor Heath.
Speaking to Football365, the former defender pointed to Suzuki's comfort with the ball at his feet as a quality that would have translated well to Merseyside. Warnock recalled watching the shot-stopper perform against Brazil at the World Cup, describing his distribution as a standout attribute despite feeling he could have done more to prevent the opening goal of that match.
With Alisson approaching the final stages of his current contract, Liverpool opted to secure Lucca Brughmans from Genk instead. That deal is scheduled to take effect in 2027, leaving Warnock to suggest the Reds missed an immediate opportunity by not pursuing Suzuki.
Villa's own summer activity was extensive. According to Football365, the club brought in eleven new faces while ten departed, including several established first-team regulars. Warnock acknowledged that losing six members of the starting line-up from the Europa League final presents a short-term challenge, though he expressed faith in Unai Emery's capacity to rebuild over the coming seasons.
Danny Murphy echoed some of those sentiments during a recent appearance on Match of the Day, noting the scale of the squad overhaul. He described the club as being in heavy transition but did not voice serious alarm about the long-term outlook.
Suzuki now faces the task of establishing himself in a reshaped Villa squad once the January 2027 window opens for any further adjustments. For now, the focus remains on integrating the new arrivals into Emery's system following a summer of considerable change.
