Aston Villa head to Coventry City on Wednesday evening for a third-round Carabao Cup meeting between two Midlands clubs who have found the opening weeks of the Premier League deeply frustrating. According to Sports Mole, neither side has managed to build any meaningful domestic momentum since the season began.
Unai Emery’s squad sit on a single league point following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Nottingham Forest at Villa Park. Igor Jesus scored late to secure victory for the visitors after Alysson had briefly levelled the contest. That loss followed a 3-2 Champions League win away at Club Brugge, underlining how inconsistent Villa have been across competitions since lifting the Europa League trophy last term.
Coventry arrive at this fixture in even worse shape. Frank Lampard’s team returned to the top flight as Championship winners last season but have lost all four of their opening Premier League matches without scoring, conceding ten goals in the process. Five of those went in during last week’s heavy defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion, a game in which Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off.
The Sky Blues’ only success this campaign came in the previous round of the Carabao Cup, when they beat Plymouth Argyle 4-2 with Awoniyi among the scorers. Wednesday’s match marks the first time these two clubs have met in this particular competition, and their most recent competitive encounter in any knockout format dates back almost three decades.
Villa are hoping to reach the fourth round of the tournament for only the second occasion in six attempts. Despite Emery’s strong record in European football and a run to the 2025 FA Cup semi-finals, the club’s domestic cup form has frequently ended in early disappointment.
Coventry remain without several players, including Haji Wright, Josh Eccles and Luke Woolfenden. Kaine Kesler-Hayden, who spent time in the Villa academy, is also sidelined. Summer recruit Sidiki Cherif did make his debut as a substitute against Brighton, however.
For Villa, the short journey across the West Midlands offers an opportunity to steady the ship before the transfer market reopens in January. A comfortable result would ease some pressure on a squad still adjusting to life after a turbulent summer window.
