The 31-year-old, who joined on a free transfer following his release by Bayern Munich last month, has yet to make his debut and will now miss four fixtures while he recovers.
In a statement published on Instagram and reported by Birmingham Live on 7 September, the midfielder explained that his body had reacted to the sudden increase in physical demands after a period away from competitive football. He described the situation as frustrating but stressed that he intends to use the upcoming international break to regain full strength before returning to action.
German newspaper BILD, as covered by Sport Witness, identified the specific complaint as an irritation in Goretzka’s left knee rather than a serious structural injury. The report noted that the joint has caused him problems previously, including arthroscopic surgery in the summer of 2022, and that Villa’s medical staff are treating the current spell out as a preventative measure. His earliest possible return is listed as 10 October, when Aston Villa host Brentford in the Premier League.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Club Brugge, Unai Emery acknowledged the disappointment but insisted the squad has adequate cover. The manager named Ross Barkley, Joao Gomes, Lamare Bogarde and Boubacar Kamara as players ready to step into the midfield roles Goretzka was expected to fill.
Sports science specialist Markus Schauer offered further context in remarks carried by Sport Witness, explaining that the Premier League requires players to handle higher intensity more frequently and with shorter recovery periods than other leagues. He suggested that missing a full pre-season does not necessarily leave a player unfit, but can reduce the body’s gradual tolerance for those repeated bursts of acceleration and deceleration.
The timing is particularly unwelcome for Villa, who have failed to win any of their opening three league matches and have yet to score. Goretzka’s absence rules him out of the European fixture in Belgium, home and away Premier League games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, and a match against Coventry City.
