He stated that the club analysed what to expect between now and the winter break. Lamare Bogarde offers balance in defence, while Boubacar Kamara can also fill in if required, giving the coaching staff alternative options without needing the newest recruit immediately.
Madjo’s situation differs. The 17-year-old drew attention last month by scoring against Paris Saint-Germain during the UEFA Super Cup final, reinforcing his reputation as a highly rated prospect. However, Emery confirmed the forward faces at least another fortnight on the sidelines through injury, making his inclusion impractical for the initial European fixtures.
Fellow academy product Modou Keba Cisse is also unavailable due to a separate physical issue. Emery stressed that the decisions were tough on everyone involved but insisted they followed detailed analysis rather than impulse. He expressed confidence that Harwood-Bellis would feature in European competition later in the campaign or in future seasons.
Tyrone Mings retains his place in the continental group despite gradually slipping down the domestic pecking order. Selecting him ahead of a player who commanded such a substantial fee raised eyebrows among supporters. A shortage of homegrown talent within the wider roster appears to have restricted the manager’s flexibility when compiling the list.
Tammy Abraham was reportedly willing to depart on loan during the closing stages of the window but ultimately stayed to compete for minutes after facing criticism regarding his output last term. His retention adds further context to the tight margins Emery faced when trimming numbers for UEFA compliance.
Villa fans may have preferred seeing the expensive newcomer and the exciting teenager included given their long-term importance to the project. For now, though, the squad is set, and both omitted players must wait for opportunities elsewhere until the continental knockout rounds or beyond.
