Keith Wyness, who served as Aston Villa's chief executive between 2016 and 2018, has suggested that Unai Emery could consider leaving the club next summer if approached by teams without the same financial restrictions. The claims were made during an appearance on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast earlier this month.
Wyness, who now advises elite clubs through his own consultancy, argued that UEFA's strict squad-cost ratio limitations place Villa at a disadvantage against rivals operating with greater freedom in the transfer market. He acknowledged Emery's loyalty to the club's owners but indicated that competing under those conditions could eventually prove testing for the manager.
Villa spent approximately £280 million during the summer transfer window, much of it reinvested following the departures of several important first-team players. Despite that outlay, the club remains tied to a UEFA settlement agreement that requires them to keep reducing their squad-cost ratio over the coming seasons.
According to Wyness, those regulations mean Emery will inevitably find himself managing against opponents whose budgets are not similarly capped. He stated that while the current campaign will be the Basque coach's immediate focus, offers from unconstrained clubs are likely to emerge next year.
Emery has been in charge at Villa Park since October 2022, guiding the team to consistent Premier League finishes and delivering silverware last season. His work has drawn admiration across European football, making him a frequent subject of speculation whenever managerial vacancies arise elsewhere.
With the transfer window now closed until January 2027, any discussion about Emery's future remains firmly hypothetical for the time being. Villa have not commented publicly on the former chief executive's remarks.
