Former senior Aston Villa scout Bryan King has voiced concern over the scale of player sales completed before the summer window closed on 1 September. Speaking to Football Insider earlier this week, King said supporters he had contacted were unhappy with the volume of departures from the squad that won the Europa League in May.
Six members of the starting eleven that faced Freiburg in the final have left the club. Among the most prominent exits were Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was also widely expected to move after pursuing a transfer for several windows.
King argued that losing so many established performers at once was unusual. He noted that the club had effectively sold their leading defenders and central midfielders in quick succession, removing the core of a successful team within a single transfer window.
To fill those gaps, Villa recruited ten new signings during the summer. However, King suggested that several of the arrivals carry question marks and that replacing fan favourites with unproven alternatives had frustrated sections of the support base.
The timing of such a radical rebuild has coincided with a difficult start to the domestic campaign. Unai Emery's side are still searching for their first Premier League victory, although not all of the new additions have featured regularly yet.
There was a positive result in Europe on Tuesday when Villa defeated Club Brugge in their opening Champions League fixture. Attention now turns to Saturday's visit of Nottingham Forest to Villa Park, where Emery will hope his reworked squad can begin finding consistency.
Most of the players who departed were aged 28 or older, making some degree of refreshment logical. Yet undertaking the entire transition in one window, rather than spreading it across several, represents a significant gamble for the club's hierarchy.
Aston Villa have not commented publicly on King's remarks. With the transfer market shut until January 2027, Emery must work with the group assembled over the summer and integrate the remaining newcomers as quickly as possible.
