Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are said to view Unai Emery as one of three possible successors to their current head coach, according to a report first published by Sport Witness on Friday. The Spanish manager is claimed to sit alongside Pep Guardiola and Julian Nagelsmann on a shortlist drawn up should the club decide to part company with Simone Inzaghi.
Citing the outlet 365 Scores, Sport Witness states that no negotiations or direct contact have taken place with any of the three candidates. Al-Hilal are reportedly still evaluating their existing coaching staff, and any decision to pursue a new appointment hinges entirely on whether Inzaghi is removed from his post.
Despite winning five of their opening six league fixtures this season and sitting top of the table, questions have apparently arisen around the Italian's standing. The report suggests he was largely excluded from transfer decisions during the summer window, prompting officials to explore alternatives capable of leading the team forward.
Guardiola and Nagelsmann are both currently without a club after departing Manchester City and the German national team respectively. Emery, by contrast, remains under contract at Villa Park, where he has overseen 201 matches since arriving in November 2022, recording 110 victories and 35 draws.
His tenure has delivered consistent European qualification each season, culminating in a return to the continent's elite competition after an absence spanning four decades. He also guided the squad to Europa League glory last term, further raising his profile across the game.
Villa director Damian Vidagany moved to quell speculation linking the manager elsewhere back in May, when Real Madrid were among the clubs mentioned. Speaking at the time, Vidagany said: "Unai is happy here at Aston Villa. We have, if not the best, one of the two or three best coaches in the world."
He added: "Not only at Real Madrid, but at many top clubs around the world, Unai’s name has been and continues to be on the table." With the Premier League transfer window now closed until January 2027, any theoretical interest from Saudi Arabia cannot result in a departure before the new year regardless.
