Zion Suzuki shines on debut as Villa beat Spurs for first league win

Aston Villa earned their first Premier League victory of the campaign with a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday lunchtime, and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was central to the result. The 24-year-old, who arrived from Parma last month, produced several important interventions to help his side hold off a late rally from the hosts.

Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson found the net for Villa, but BBC Sport highlights Suzuki's contribution between the posts as equally significant. He denied Savio twice in quick succession during a spell when Tottenham controlled possession, and benefited from a stroke of luck when Archie Gray's strike deflected narrowly wide off his foot.

Unai Emery singled out the Japanese international in his post-match remarks. "We needed the keeper," the head coach said. "He is a keeper to save us. To make sure in the goal he has the quality and then he has the skills to play and build up." Emery added that Suzuki is improving by taking calculated risks with the ball at his feet.

Those distribution skills were evident for Villa's second goal. Suzuki launched a long kick from inside his own six-yard box deep into the opposition half, allowing Jackson to collect possession and finish into the bottom corner. "In the build up, he can choose to play long balls because he has a very long pass in behind and he did that for the second goal we scored," Emery explained.

Villa moved for Suzuki during the summer transfer window, which closed on 1 September, following Emiliano Martínez's departure to Chelsea. His comfort in possession and ability to drive passes forward with minimal backlift were identified as key strengths before the deal was completed.

Suzuki holds 28 caps for Japan and previously spent time playing club football in Belgium and Italy. Dennis Rudel, who coached him at Sint-Truiden, told BBC Sport in August that the goalkeeper possesses elite physical attributes, citing his jumping power, throwing range and kicking technique as unmatched worldwide.

Rudel also pointed to Suzuki's composure under pressure, noting that his mental clarity during international tournaments stood out as his greatest asset. If he remains fit, the former Union Berlin coach believes he has the tools to develop into one of the leading players in his position globally.

Villa now turn their attention to next Saturday's home fixture against Brentford at Villa Park, where Suzuki will look to build on a highly encouraging first league appearance in claret and blue.
