Aston Villa advanced in the League Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday night. The away win keeps Unai Emery's side moving forward in the competition while offering significant playing time to several members of his reshaped squad.

Tammy Abraham led the way for the visitors, finding the net twice during his 69 minutes on the pitch. Ross Barkley also contributed a goal alongside an assist, capping a busy performance that included three shots and a booking.

The midfield offered plenty of creativity throughout the contest. Summer signing Ibrahim Mbaye provided an assist and created four chances during his 64 minutes before being withdrawn, while George Hemmings also registered an assist in his 79-minute appearance.

Emery took the opportunity to integrate several players who arrived before the transfer window closed on 1 September. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Matteo Ruggeri all completed the full 90 minutes at the back, with fellow newcomer Zion Suzuki taking over in goal for the second half after Marco Bizot started the match.

John McGinn controlled much of the tempo in the opening hour, attempting three shots and providing four key passes before making way. Tyrone Mings and Lamare Bogarde were ever-present in defence and midfield respectively as Villa managed the game professionally after establishing their lead.

The head coach's thoughts on the performance were issued through the club's official channels following the final whistle. Attention now turns to the Premier League, where Villa travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
