Matty Cash and João Gomes available for Villa's trip to Tottenham

Unai Emery has confirmed that Matty Cash and João Gomes should both be fit to face Tottenham Hotspur when Aston Villa travel to north London on Saturday. According to Birmingham Live, the manager delivered the team news update during his pre-match briefing ahead of the 12:30 kick-off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Cash travelled with the squad for Wednesday's League Cup tie at the Coventry Building Society Arena but watched the 3-1 victory from the bench. He is now expected to rejoin the starting line-up for the Premier League fixture. Gomes, meanwhile, has shaken off a calf complaint and is eligible for selection again having completed a three-game domestic ban. That suspension stemmed from a red card he received during the opening-day defeat by Brighton.

Emery was candid about the wider fitness problems affecting his squad. Speaking to reporters, he said: "We have so many players injured, so it is difficult to mention everyone." The Spaniard then listed Marco Bizot, Amadou Onana, Kadan Cisse, Pau Torres, Ian Maatsen, Leon Goretzka and Madjo as players who will definitely miss the trip.

Villa head into the weekend still searching for their first league victory of the campaign, having drawn once and lost three times since August. Their most recent outing in the division was a 2-1 home defeat by Nottingham Forest last Saturday, although they bounced back midweek with a comfortable cup win over Coventry City.

Tottenham arrive at the fixture in similarly frustrating form, yet to register a Premier League success after recording two draws and two losses. Historically, Villa have fared well under Emery at this ground, winning three of their four previous league visits to Spurs, alongside an FA Cup third-round triumph last season. They did, however, lose the most recent meeting between the sides in May, a game in which Emery rotated his squad heavily.

With the transfer window now closed until January 2027, Emery must work with the group he assembled over the summer. The returns of Cash and Gomes offer some relief, but the lengthy absentee list means squad depth will be tested again this weekend.
