Emery had already addressed the subject of discipline during his pre-match remarks on Friday. He explained why Jackson was withdrawn at half-time against Nottingham Forest last weekend, noting that referee Andy Madley had warned a member of the coaching staff that another foul would result in a red card. “Mentality means a lot of things, it’s very important. One of those things is control of emotions, individually,” Emery said. “We considered the red card at Brighton [for Gomes], we considered the yellow card for Jackson, we must control it.”
