Manzambi, Jackson and Buendía on target as Villa come from behind to beat Tottenham

Aston Villa claimed their first Premier League win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today. Goals from Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendía put Unai Emery’s side firmly in control before a late rally from the hosts.

According to BBC Sport’s player ratings, Manzambi opened the scoring when he beat Jan Paul van Hecke to the ball, having earlier forced a comfortable save from Antonin Kinsky. Jackson proved a persistent nuisance for the Spurs defence, while Buendía also found the net to give Villa a commanding position.

The visitors were aided by Tottenham’s misfortune. Pedro Porro returned to the starting line-up after missing recent matches but lasted only 18 minutes before limping off with an injury. Micky van de Ven was struck in the face shortly before half-time and was receiving treatment off the pitch when Villa capitalised.

Zion Suzuki produced an excellent save to deny Savio a volley during a strong opening spell for Tottenham, keeping the contest level before Villa took charge. Andrew Robertson’s attempt to keep the ball in play ultimately contributed to the visitors’ first goal.

Spurs introduced Mohammed Kudus at half-time in search of greater attacking threat, and he did find the net only to have the effort ruled out for offside. Archie Gray, who replaced the injured Porro early on, was denied by Suzuki with his first touch after coming on.

Conor Gallagher and Van Hecke both scored late consolation goals for Tottenham, but the home side remain without a Premier League victory. For Villa, the result marks a significant step forward after draws against Hull City and Nottingham Forest and last month’s narrow defeat by Arsenal.
