Alejandro Garnacho yet to start for Aston Villa as loan deal draws scrutiny

Alejandro Garnacho has not started a single Premier League or cup match for Aston Villa since completing his move from Chelsea, according to reports published today by The Mirror and Football Insider. The 22-year-old arrived at Villa Park during the summer transfer window but has struggled to secure minutes under Unai Emery, with Football Insider claiming he has not even appeared from the bench in four consecutive fixtures.

The Mirror reports that neither Aston Villa nor Chelsea hold a clause allowing them to cut the arrangement short when the transfer window reopens in January 2027. Football Insider adds that the agreement carries a conditional obligation for Villa to purchase the winger permanently for approximately £42 million next summer, though those financial details have not been officially confirmed by the club.

Bryan King, identified by Football Insider as a former senior scout at Aston Villa, expressed frustration at the situation. Speaking to the outlet, King questioned why a player with Garnacho's experience is not among the first names selected, asking whether the issue relates to attitude, training performances or another factor behind the scenes. He described the Argentine as a very talented footballer and said he would be watching closely over the next few matches.

Football Insider drew comparisons between Garnacho's current position and the loan spell of Harvey Elliott last season. Elliott arrived from Liverpool under what the outlet described as similar circumstances, including a conditional purchase obligation, but ultimately made only nine appearances throughout the campaign. Those conditions were not met, and Elliott subsequently moved on loan to Valencia.

Emery addressed the Elliott situation publicly in May, stating that his apologies to the midfielder were in his mind every day and acknowledging the difficulty of explaining the decision at that point. While those comments suggested the head coach was mindful of avoiding a repeat scenario, the current handling of Garnacho indicates the matter remains unresolved.

Aston Villa host Brentford at Villa Park on Saturday 10 October before welcoming Fenerbahçe in the Champions League on Wednesday 14 October. Whether Garnacho features in either fixture will offer the next indication of his standing within Emery's plans.
