Former Villa scout compares Zion Suzuki to Andre Onana after strong start

Zion Suzuki has drawn an early comparison to Andre Onana from a former Aston Villa scout, despite earning praise for his opening weeks in English football. Bryan King, who previously worked as a senior talent spotter at Villa Park, told Football Insider that the Japanese international reminds him of the goalkeeper Manchester United signed from Inter Milan in 2023.

Suzuki arrived from Parma during the summer transfer window for a fee reported to be around £30 million. He was brought in to fill the vacancy left by Emiliano Martínez, whose six-year spell at the club ended when he moved to Chelsea in late August.

The 24-year-old has started life in the Premier League brightly, making several important saves during Saturday's 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Pundits and supporters have largely offered positive verdicts on his performances so far.

King, however, struck a more cautious tone. Speaking to Football Insider, he suggested Suzuki shares stylistic traits with Onana, noting both are capable of spectacular stops but can make routine actions look unnecessarily difficult. The former scout added that he believes there is always a mistake lurking in the new signing's game and said he needs to see more before classifying him as a top-flight regular.

Onana himself spent last season on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor after struggling for consistency at Old Trafford. United replaced him with Senne Lammens during the most recent window.

Villa showed considerable faith in Suzuki by making him their primary goalkeeper immediately upon arrival. With the transfer window now closed until January 2027, the club will be hoping he continues to adapt quickly under Unai Emery as they navigate a busy schedule across domestic and European competitions.
