Zion Suzuki ranks among the Premier League's best shot-stoppers after strong start

Zion Suzuki has settled quickly into life at Aston Villa since completing his summer move from Parma, and Birmingham Live reports that his shot-stopping numbers already place him among the Premier League's most effective goalkeepers. The 24-year-old was brought in following Emiliano Martínez's departure to Chelsea, and the local outlet suggests the transition between the posts has been largely seamless.

Distribution has been a particular strength so far. Birmingham Live highlights Suzuki's ability to launch attacks with both his feet and long throws, turning defensive situations into forward momentum. That quality was evident during Villa's 3-2 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 19 September, where he also made three saves to deny Savio and produced a close-range stop against Archie Gray.

The publication uses data from FotMob to rank Premier League goalkeepers by the percentage of shots they have stopped. Leeds United's James Trafford sits top of that list at 87 per cent, with Everton's Jordan Pickford next on 83.3 per cent. Liverpool's Caoimhín Kelleher and Olympiacos' Konstantinos Tzolakis share third place at 81 per cent, while Alisson Becker follows on 77.8 per cent. Sunderland's Robin Roefs occupies the bottom spot at 37.5 per cent.

Suzuki has conceded goals in each of Villa's opening fixtures, including two late strikes at Tottenham when the defensive line lost concentration, according to the report. He was also beaten by a penalty and a corner-bound effort from Hugo Vetlesen during the 3-2 Champions League win at Club Brugge on Tuesday 8 September, and was caught out from close range by Bukayo Saka in the 1-2 home defeat by Nottingham Forest on Saturday 12 September.

Despite those moments, Birmingham Live argues that the broader body of work points to a successful recruitment. The Japanese international arrived with a growing reputation after his World Cup performances, and his early contributions suggest the investment is beginning to pay dividends ahead of Villa's next home fixture against Brentford on Saturday 10 October.
